My Tune: Mixtape by Butch Walker
Because it’s not just any other mixtapes long kept. It is YOUR mixtape…YOURS.
Well, personally, this song by Butch Walker is one of the greatest songs in the world. It has been my favorite one since I was just a high school freshman. Going through the song uncountable times, I find myself finally discovering why I like the song so much. Aside from the perfect melody and mix of rhythms and how the instruments were professionally manipulated, one feature of the song which I like the most is its undeniable rareness. And this factor is well-characterized by the song’s rare lyrics.
Before I continue scribbling on, I want to share with you the lyrics of the said song. I believe reading this while actually listening to the song itself will help you appreciate and understand my point of writing this blog post more. So, here it is:
You say hello, inside I’m screaming I love you.
You say goodnight, in my mind
I’m sleeping next to you.
You drive away
From my car crash of a heart,
And I don’t know…
But you gave me the best mixtape I have
Even all the bad songs ain’t so bad
I just wish there was so much more than that,
About me and you
You talk to him, and it burns me like the sun
You talk to her, and you say that you feel like
he’s the one
I talk to me, but you can’t hear the pain I feel, you don’t know…
Cause you gave me the best mixtape I have
Even all the sad songs ain’t so sad
I only wish that there was more than that,
about me and you…
Don’t turn around and say goodbye again
Yea it crushes my head when you call me your friend
And I’m not the same person from back in the day
In the back of the class that you thought was gay
No I can’t find the words cause I lost them the minute they fell out my mouth
Yeah it’s love and I’m in it
So give me your lips and just let me kiss them
And let’s get messed up and listen to probably
The best mixtape I have
Even all the bad songs ain’t so bad
I just wish there was so much more than that, about me and you…
There you have it. Now, listening to this song over and over and over again made me realize the whole point of the song itself(well maybe based on my point of view).
Upon obsessing with this masterpiece, I realized that in life, nothing really is permanent. Maybe at one point of our lives we meet a person we think is the “Right One” for us. But then the next day, who we believed will be standing right by our sides until the day we die is actually just an acquaintance or maybe, just someone we’re not destined to be with. The truth of the matter is that every once in a while good things come to an end. If you try to watch the music video of the song, you may see that the guy there didn’t end up with the girl he met probably the previous half of his life who he thought was for him. True, sometimes circumstances in life may get tricky. But the bottom line is, we HAVE to be trickier. Life is what you make it. And I couldn’t agree more.
If we “lose” someone or something in life, let us not consider such scenarios as the end of the world because the reality is that the process of losing is actually a process of learning. Personally, I even believe that first relationships are designed so that we can learn from it. So that the next time we enter a relationship, be it a romantic or just an amicable one, we are more matured and we know what to do and how to deal with things in life. There’s no such thing as a “first and last”, nor is there such thing as a “perfect relationship”–at least, not in this typical humanity. Disagree, but I wouldn’t mind. Yes, there is no such thing as a “first and last”, but we can always learn from our “firsts” and do better the next time around. Yes, there is no such thing as a “perfect relationship”, but we can always fill it with perfect moments and memories.
The music video is actually quite sad. I was even in the wrath of sober when I first saw it.
It’s sad…but it has always served as a lesson.
